Pony Trekking

OBITUARY FOR NTATE BOKANG JACOB NTLHOKI click here

These trips are focused on pony trekking, but as a bonus allow you to you travel the spectacular Sani Pass, cross the second highest road pass in Lesotho, traverse remote villages and see the way of life of the unique mountain people of Lesotho in addition to the thrill of riding through majestic mountain scenery. The horse riding is laid on by a Basotho operator, the Nthloki family, who source some of their horses from the local community. They are very experienced riding guides, and assure us that even the novice and inexperienced rider will feel at ease on the Basotho ponies which they use. These animals are a breed found only in Lesotho – short, stocky, sturdy and extremely sure-footed animals. We overnight in village type accommodation on all the trips, thereby spreading the benefits of tourism as widely as possible within the local community.

2 DAY TOUR
Day 1 This tour is of necessity quite concentrated as we need to fit a lot into a short time. The tour starts from Sani Lodge at 9am. We travel the spectacular 4x4 track up the Sani Pass and into Lesotho. From Sani Top, we drive about 50km into Lesotho, over Black Mountain Pass (at 3240m, the second highest road pass in Lesotho) and down the Sehonghong river valley, through rugged scenery. Lunch along the way by the river. We arrive at Molumong , about 50km into Lesotho and saddle up for a 2 to 3 hour afternoon ride to the village of Libibing where we stay the night in traditional rondavel accommodation.

Day 2 After breakfast, ride back via a different route to Molumong. After lunch start the return journey stopping for a drink at Sani Top Chalet, reputed to be the highest pub in Africa. Return to Sani Lodge by around 5 pm.

3 DAY TOUR
DAY 1
This tour is a bit more relaxed and allows you more time on horseback. It starts as for the 2 day tour, stopping for lunch by a set of lovely swimming spots in the river, and then heading on into typical highland village country. We arrive at Molumong in mid-afternoon, saddle up and do a 2 hour ride to Libibing village where we spend the night in traditional rondavel accommodation.

DAY 2 After breakfast we set off on a full day of riding. The day will include superb views, crossing the Senqu River and climbing up high into the mountains to stay the night in the village of Malubelube where we stay the night in traditional rondavel accommodation.

DAY 3 After breakfast, we set off on horse back following a shorter return route to Molumong. Arriving around noon, we have lunch before setting off on the journey home. Time permitting, we stop off for a drink at Sani Top Chalet, reputed to be the highest pub in Africa. Return to Sani Lodge by around 5 pm

  • Day 2
After breakfast, meet the horse riding guide and the horses, saddle up and head off into the mountains.. Ride up and up towards the summit of Africa!  Stay the night in a motebo or shepherd's dwelling on a high ridge.

OPTION 2: 4 Day Village trek:

  • DAY 1

  • DAY 2
After breakfast we set off on a full day of riding. The day will include superb views, crossing the Senqu River and climbing up high into the mountains to stay the night in the village of Malubelube where we stay the night in traditional rondavel accommodation.

  • DAY 3
After breakfast we set off on another full day of riding. The day will include more superb views and ends up in the little visited remote village of Bobatsi where we stay the night in traditional rondavel accommodation.

If visitors take photos of any local people, we encourage them to print some of the best ones out and to send them to us at Sani Lodge. People in Lesotho do not own cameras, and absolutely love receiving actual printed photos of  themselves. If you post them back to us at Sani lodge, we will take them into Lesotho on future tours and try and ensure that the photo reaches its rightful owner! Post photos to us at P.O. Box 485, Underberg, 3257, South Africa.
