THERE ARE TWO SELF-CATERING COTTAGES CALLED HONEYGUIDE AND ALOE AVAILABLE, EACH OFFERING SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE. GUINEAFOWL COTTAGE IS PART OF SANI LODGE BACKPACKERS

  • Please note that we are 19km from the nearest grocery store in Underberg so please stock up there if you plan to do your own self-catering.
  • We ask guests to please respect the cottages location in nature and other guests by ensuring that no music is played from cars or otherwise and no unruly behaviour or noise construing disturbance to wildlife and guests will be tolerated. Drones and fireworks of any kind are strictly disallowed here.

HONEYGUIDE SELF CATERING COTTAGE


SITUATION

Honeyguide is a charming, private, stone-clad cottage on the Sani Pass road just 16 kilometres from the South African border post with Lesotho, nestling at the base of the little 'Berg on the 75 acre Stromness Farm, which borders onto the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. The cottage has magnificent views of Hodgson's Peaks (The Giant's Cup) and the escarpment bordering onto Lesotho and has an indigenous garden attracting birds, duiker and reedbuck. This peaceful country haven is owner-run by Simone and Russell Suchet, who have been involved with many aspects of tourism and owned the property since 1995.

ACCOMMODATION

Honeyguide is a compact cottage with three bedrooms, ideal for sleeping a family of six with mom and dad on a double bed in the facebrick mountain view ,main bedroom en suite ( shower, toilet, handbasin luxury shower gel, hand soap ,lotion, hand towel and bath towels) with its own entrance onto the veranda. A kettle is provided along with complimentary tea, coffee and a sachet sample of organic Fair Trade Coffee .The last two bedrooms share a bathroom with shower, toilet, handbasin , luxury shower gel, hand soap ,lotion, hand towel and bath towels. A child's campcot is available on request. The open living area has a door onto the veranda and includes a small kitchenette equipped with fridge, gas stove, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans, kettle, toaster, microwave , stove kettle ( in the event of power outage)and a breakfast nook. Cypress floors and pine ceilings add to the charm and cosiness. There is a small sitting room with open fireplace (firewood is provided free of charge for this) and an outdoor braai in the garden ( wood can be purchased for this). Hot water is provided by a solar geyser with electric back-up. All linen including quality fitted and flat sheets , feather down duvets and blankets provided. The cottage has basic daily servicing as detailed in the guest information file. Laundry service available at set rates. You can park your vehicle right next to the cottage. Complimentary tea, coffee, a sachet sample of organic Fair Trade plunger coffee ( which is available for sale in craft shop on site in support of Fair Trade farmers) and farm milk from our Jersey cows (in season only) provided. The cottage may also be booked out into two parts for 4 people by being divided into the self-catering section encompassing the twin bedroom, bunk bed room, sitting room, kitchenette, bathroom , and with the main bedroom en suite booked separately for a couple . The main bedroom in this situation will not have access to the sitting room or kitchenette in the cottage and guests staying here will utilise Sani Lodge’s equipped self- catering kitchens, braai area and restaurant on site. Guests may park near the cottage. All meals are available at the restaurant on site, but do need advance booking at same time as accommodation is booked.


ALOE SELF CATERING COTTAGE


SITUATION

Aloe Cottage is a cosy, private cottage on the Sani Pass road, just 16 kilometres from the South African border post with Lesotho ,nestling at the base of the little ‘Berg on the 75 acre Stromness Farm , which borders onto the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park world heritage site. The cottage is set in indigenous gardens beside a gurgling stream which provides pure drinking water and also has uninterrupted views of Hodgson’s Peaks ( The Giant’s Cop) and the escarpment bordering onto Lesotho. This peaceful country haven is owner-run by Simone and Russell Suchet, who have been involved with many aspects of tourism for several years.

ACCOMMODATION

Aloe Cottage sleeps four people in total. It has two bedrooms, the main bedroom with a double bed and the smaller second bedroom with two single beds. Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom (one has a shower and the other a bath from which you can recline with a view of the mountains). A child's campcot is available on request. The kitchen is fully equipped with large fridge, gas stove, cutlery, crockery, kettle, microwave, pots and pans. There is a cosy lounge with open fireplace (free firewood is provided) and dining table. Cypress floors and pine ceilings add to the charm. All linen including fitted and flat quality sheets, feather down duvets, blankets ,bath towels, shower soap, hand soap and lotion is provided. Hot water is provided by a solar geyser with electric back-up. Complimentary tea, coffee, organic Fair Trade plunger coffee and our farm milk is provided. The cottage has basic daily servicing detailed in the guest information file. Laundry service available at set rates. You may park your vehicle right next to the cottage. The garden has a braai facility( wood may be purchased for this) and is a birder’s haven with bird bath and feeder. Tame duiker visit from autumn through winter. Please note that the swimming pool in the owner’s garden nearby is strictly out of bounds for guests – there is a swimming pool at Sani Lodge just 200 metres away which you may use. Restaurant on site provides all meals but please book these in advance at same time as accommodation booking .


GUINEAFOWL SELF CATERING COTTAGE. This cottage is part of Sani Lodge Backpackers

SITUATION

Guineafowl cottage has a thatched roof and is situated on the Sani Pass road, just 16 kilometres from the South African border post with Lesotho ,on the 75 acre Stromness Farm, which borders directly onto the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park world heritage site . The cottage is set in indigenous gardens with a small private garden behind the cottage overlooking the stream. The rondavels of Sani Lodge Backpackers are neighbouring the cottage and it does not have a direct mountain view. Parking is in the main Sani Lodge guest parking area 50 metres away. You may not park your car near the cottage due to the stream blocking access.

ACCOMMODATION

This small cottage sleeps four people and is ideally suited for a family of two adults and two children. It simply furnished with two bedrooms, the main room with double bed and a second smaller one with bunk bed. The thick walls of Guineafowl cottage were built from pole and dhaka and together with a thatch roof make it well insulated and give it a uniquely cosy and authentic African charm. There is no open fireplace due to the thatch roof, but there are heating wall panels in each room for winter. There is a fully equipped kitchenette, one bathroom (shower, toilet, handbasin) and sitting room. All linen including fitted and flat sheets, blankets ,feather down duvets, hand and bath towels, luxury shower gel, hand soap and lotion is provided. The cottage has basic daily servicing detailed in the guest information file. Laundry service available at set rates. Complimentary tea, coffee,a sachet sample of organic Fair Trade plunger coffee ( craft shop on site sells more coffee beans in support of Fair Trade farmers) and farm milk (when in season) provided. The garden has a braai facility ( wood may be purchased). Restaurant on site provides all meals but please book these in advance at same time as accommodation booking.

ACTIVITIES FOR GUESTS STAYING IN THE SELF-CATERING COTTAGES
This is an ideal place for a healthy family holiday, as there are plenty of activities and tours which can be arranged including hiking, Sani Pass tours into Lesotho, horseriding and Bushman paintings. There is something for the whole family; trout/bass fishing on nearby dams, relaxing in the tranquil gardens enjoying the magnificent views, birdwatching ( there is a bird list in the cottage file showing 19 endemic species on our property and 92 species in total), macro-photographing the plethora of wild flowers in spring and summer and inhaling pure mountain air. Children can play on swings at the tea garden 100m away from the cottages, enjoy milkshakes and pancakes in the restaurant, play a game of table tennis , watch our Jersey cows being hand milked twice daily and feed calves with warm mother’s milk in bottles ( during calving season). The whole family can enjoy the 2.5km nature trail with illustrated booklet as a guide and there is a swimming pool at Sani Lodge as well as a small fresh water dam on the trail which guests may swim in. The craft shop and farm stall is definitely worth a visit as we directly support small suppliers of unique handcrafts, books, maps, stock organic Fair Trade products ( coffee, tea, chocolate) and make our own ice-cream, cultured yoghurt and butter from our dear Jersey cows’ milk ,plus a wide range of homemade jams and preserves from our own fruit trees.


MEALS AVAILABLE FOR GUESTS STAYING IN THE  SELF-CATERING COTTAGES

A restaurant on the property called "The Giant's Cup" is open daily from 0730 hours to 2000 hours for dinners, breakfasts, savoury and sweet pancakes, toasted sandwiches, homemade cakes, farmhouse cheese, trout, teas, good organic filter coffee and cappuccinos , milkshakes and lots more.
DINNER FOR THE NIGHT OF ARRIVAL NEEDS TO BE ORDERED IN ADVANCE ALONG WITH ACCOMMODATION BOOKING. MEALS ARE SIMPLE, HOME COOKED AFFAIRS. DINNER IS ONLY PREPARED FOR GUESTS MAKING CONFIRMED ADVANCE BOOKINGS AND IS SERVED AT 6.30 PM PROMPTLY. IF YOU PLAN TO ARRIVE LATER THAN 6.30 PM, PLEASE LET US KNOW SO THAT YOUR MEAL WILL BE DISHED UP FOR YOU AND YOU CAN REHEAT IT IN YOUR COTTAGE.
