Simone stocks the Giant’s Cup Crafts shop at the Giant’s Cup Cafe, just 50 metres from Sani Lodge Backpackers, with novel crafts made by mostly small businesses and single entrepreneurs. The latest addition to the shop and restaurant are paintings produced by Simone herself, mostly in acrylic medium and covering a wide range of subjects from wild animals such as elephant, leopard, nyala, duiker, wild dog to baobab trees, Drakensberg , Lesotho mountain scenes and flowers.
“All of my work is inspired from photographs I take on holidays and these are always to nature reserves and other wild, pristine places of interest in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. I love animals, birds, trees , flowers, the bushveld, marine rock pools, rugged mountains. A good camera has enabled me to capture interesting behaviour of fauna as well as representations of my beloved trees and flowers in their natural environments and in the best light of dawn or late afternoon . The spectrum of earthy tones are my favourite and nowhere are these colours richer than in nature; the raw grey of an elephant’s skin, rocks, coat of a klipspringer, bird feathers, clouds, water, reflections, tree bark , inner ear pattern of a duiker. The rich brown of burnt/raw sienna or burnt/raw umber of grasses, sand, pottery, bark, animal fur and skin and the Red ochre hue of skin, soil, wood, rocks”.
The art gallery is open daily from 0730 hours to 1700 hours and is situated 10 .5 km down the Sani Pass road, Southern Drakensberg, Kwazulu Natal.
