VOLUNTEERS BUSY IN A SESSION WITH LEARNERS AT KWAPITELA SCHOOL
Volunteering is organised by Sani Lodge Backpackers and does not cost the volunteer anything. We set up volunteering at the local rural school called KwaPitela 18 months ago in coordination with the Headmaster Mr Ndlovu and his Governing Body. The school is 6kms from Sani Lodge and can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by the volunteer’s own vehicle or we offer a lift service at a nominal fee. The aim of this volunteering project is to assist the teachers as the classes are combined and by helping to improve the level of English of the learners through conversation, reading, games . So whilst the teacher is teaching Grade 4 learners for example, the volunteer will take the Grade 5 learners to the library or outside weather permitting.
This volunteering project offers you the volunteer a unique opportunity to engage with Zulu children in a rural school, to learn about their culture , songs and dance, and offering them the chance to learn about different parts of the world through the volunteer explaining where they are from. All conversation is in English , thus helping the children become more confident to speak a language different from their own mother tongue of Zulu. Volunteering is not only fun but gives one the chance to decide if the teaching profession is your vocation in life. Engaging with children is a way of giving back to society .
