We invite volunteers to come to Sani Lodge Backpackers and read to children at the local rural Primary School . Your input and the benefits to the children will be immeasurably appreciated ;Social reformer, writer and statesman, Frederick Douglass said: “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” South African children in more than 16 000 public schools do not have access to libraries and most of their parents cannot afford to buy books as they are already living below the breadline. These children have never experienced the magic of becoming immersed in a good book. Biblionef makes it possible for them to have access to books by donating appropriate and relevant South African storybooks to them, thereby instilling a love of reading.
“Biblionef South Africas supports children in under-resourced organisations with new, high-quality, locally produced storybooks – and is the only facility in the country to provide children’s books in all of South Africa’s 11 official languages .
Our vision is to create lifelong readers who are good citizens, who can read and think for themselves, resulting in a society where everyone is literate; has access to education and finds reading both a great pleasure and a necessity.
We only donate new children’s books. Every child is worthy of receiving new books, and they help to create the right circumstances to engender a love of reading and respect for the written word. We pride ourselves on donating mother tongue storybooks, because research shows that children who have the opportunity to learn basic reading and writing skills in their mother tongue perform better throughout their educational lives. We work very closely with South African publishers to source local writers and illustrators. Funding permitting, Biblionef commissions the publishing of certain titles in African languages. We strive to donate books with a focus on African culture and heritage that children can relate to. This is key to turning a non-reader into a reader .
-Our mission is to make books available for children (ages three to 18) in all official languages, for reading pleasure and for education and in this way, to lay the foundation for children to make good decisions through critical thinking, and live balanced and productive lives.”
HOW YOU CAN HELP BIBLIONEF
” As an organisation or individual, you can purchase books for your children or for your projects from Biblionef. We offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ of the most comprehensive collection of South African children’s books to make it easy for you and save you time. This service forms part of our sustainability efforts, so that we are not totally reliant on donor funding. We are extraordinarily grateful to our many generous corporate, trust and individual donors, but did you know that there is more to supporting Biblionef than donating funds?
You could also:
1)Volunteer your time at any of our special events;
2) Share your librarian or teaching knowledge at one of our beneficiary organisations;
3)Host a fundraising dinner or tea in your home; or
4) Do something spectacular – like an extreme sports event – and ask your peers to sponsor your efforts, with the proceeds going to Biblionef SA (visit www.givengain.com to learn more about this).
