SUPPORTING LOCALLY MADE PRODUCTS IN SOUTH AFRICA – CONSUMERS WAKE UP AND TAKE A STAND AGAINST IMPORTS

Since the opening of the Giant’s Cup Cafe Crafts shop back in 1997, Simone decided to stock crafts made locally in South Africa. Today more than 20 producers of local Crafts make up suppliers, most of which are small scale, family owned operations or single entrepreneurs.
If each South African with a craft making skill using local sourced materials or even recycled matter such as woodwork, knitting, ceramics, candle making, soap making, beadwork, basketware craft could impart that knowledge onto just one other person without skills, the ripple effect on society would be enormous. We would see increasing numbers of individuals passing on their new skills creating small communities who could base their livlihood on selling the crafts. I do not believe there is a single proud South African who would rather buy an imported product over a hand made locally crafted one, knowing that their purchase alleviates unemployment, poverty and instills pride in communities and all peoples including the elderly whose dignity can be boosted by such productive involvement.
