This trip is not available at the moment. Ascend the highest point south of Kilimanjaro as it should be climbed, from the Le­sotho side! This 4 day expedition to conquer the Highest Point in Southern Africa (3482m) combines the village experience at No. 10 Riverside with 2 ½ days of pony trekking. A local guide accompanies the group on the ride. Our guide also accompanies the group.

Day 1:

Departure from Sani Lodge (9.00 am)
We meet in near reception ten minutes prior to departure for a quick briefing and introduction to your guide.
Travel up Sani Pass and into Lesotho
ravel up the only road through the Drakensberg cliffs in a 4×4 whilst hearing tales of the pioneering of the rout. You will also learn about the natural history of the Drakensberg and see the beautiful wildflowers, wildlife and birds which inhabit the slopes.
Drive over Black Mountain Pass at 3240m
Ascend Black Mountain (3240m), second highest road pass in Lesotho with stunning views. We will meet the shepherds who spend the summer months in the highlands tending flocks of sheep and goats and get a sense of the life they lead. We take a short walk to view Thabana Ntlenyana, the highest point in southern Africa at 3482m.

Enjoy your picnic lunch truly majestic scenery.
Arrive at base camp. Get shown around, settle in.
Once you are settled in there are a variety of activities, which may happen in a different order on trips, but will include:

*Go for a walk into one of the neighbouring villages. See how people live. *Visit the traditional healer (have a personal consultation if you like – small extra cost).

Day 2:

Full days hike
After breakfast you will meet your local hiking guide. Once he has assisted in the loading of the pack donkey(s) we begin a full day’s hike. This will initially take you through the nearby villages through fields and orchards and up towards the summit!
Overnight in your tent next to a motebo.
A motebo is a traditional shepherds lodging built from stone and thatching grass. Meals provided by the hiking guide.

Day 3:

The summit
A full day’s hike taking you to the summit of Thabana Ntlenyana and back down again to a different motebo for the night.
Overnight in your tent next to a different motebo.
Once again, meals provided by the hiking guide.

Day 4:

After breakfast, a half days hike back to base camp.
Final lunch before heading back.
Return journey
We will then return via a stop at Sani Mountain Lodge for a drink in the highest pub in Africa. We aim to have you back at Sani Lodge Backpackers between 5 and 5:30 pm.


We sleep at base camp on the first night. The second and third nights are spent in a tent next to the rough stone huts of a shepherds’ outpost or motebo. You will require your own warm sleeping bag, tent and roll mat. If required, we do have 2 person tents and roll mats for hire at Sani Lodge.

Extreme Conditions

Thabana Ntlenyana is very high, meaning that conditions at any time of the year can be extreme. You need to be prepared for this, both mentally and in terms of your equipment and especially warm and wet weather gear and sub-zero quality sleeping bags.



Please note that the price quoted above is for tours running with a minimum of four guests. If you wish to do this tour with a group of less than four, there will be additional charges due to the fixed nature of certain costs. Owing to the current fuel cost increase, there may be an additional fuel levy.
